Discover The Great Things About Enneagram Type 7

Sevens embody the joyful side of life. They are extroverted and spontaneous. They get easily excited for things and infect other people with their enthusiasm – which is why this type is often called the Enthusiast. Sevens love to anticipate and plan the pleasures of the future, often multitasking several projects simultaneously. Sevens love big picture ideas, especially since they are overflowing with creative concepts and new approaches no one else has thought of. They want to stay above the boring and painful parts of life, so they focus on what makes life worthwhile and beautiful. Life can be viewed in many ways – Sevens love to view it as an adventure.

Key Motivation

Sevens want to feel satisfied and content. The world is so full of beautiful things to learn, experience and enjoy, that it feels like a waste to Sevens to be missing out on any of it. Their fear of being trapped in pain, of not knowing how to be happy, let’s them seek out things that help them stay on the bright side of life.

The Worst, The Best, and The Average of Enneagram Type 7

Your personality isn’t a fixed thing. People grow. While we don’t change our basic personality (as much as some of us would like that), we all can become more mature and healthy inside our personality. But at times, we also revert to less healthy behavior. This looks different for every personality type. Let’s see how it unfolds for Sevens.

Average Type 7s

Sevens walk through the world wide-eyed and ready to explore it. They usually use their quick minds to learn a lot, experience a lot and get a lot done. The way Sevens think is by anticipating the next thing: They love things that tickle their brain, because it gives them more to do and think about, and so they jump from one to the next. This can also make it hard for them to stay focused on one idea for a long period of time.
The reason they like to keep their minds so busy is because deep down, the average Seven is afraid of not knowing how to make choices that will let them be happy and content. To avoid these negative feelings, they stay active, almost as if they think that if they just keep moving, the looming dread of pain and sadness will never catch them.

Key Challenge

The key challenge of Sevens is to become insatiable. If you want to use an old word, it would be „gluttony“ – the ravenous desire to gobble up ever more stuff to fill up an emptiness that can never be satisfied. Sevens can get lost in meaningless and frantic activity just to escape their fear of being unsatisfied and discontent.

Unhealthy Type 7s

When Sevens are stuck in the unhealthy parts of their pattern, they start to teeter-totter between excess and despair. Their search for stimulation turns into a manic flight from reality.

Often this is accompanied by an addiction of some sort. Sevens are especially prone to fall prey to addictive behavior, since it guarantees a reliably high amount of pleasure and escape, even though the crash back into reality afterwards gets harder every time. Sevens who don’t know how to address their fear of sadness become irresponsible in their attempt to run away from it.

Healthy Type 7s

Healthy Sevens have learned to live with the shadowy side of life. They aren’t afraid of being unhappy or unsatisfied anymore, which allows them to live their lives just as enthusiastically, but more calmly so. Their indomitable optimism becomes infectious because it’s no longer just a pain-avoiding method, but an honest conviction that you can and will come out on the other side better than you were before.

Sevens can uniquely testify to this truth because it’s the path they have to walk themselves in order to become whole. Healthy Sevens get the greatest joy from contributing something to the world, and they also acquire the discipline to not only start things, but also see them through to their glorious end. In that way, healthy Sevens have the unique gift to remind the rest of us of the pure pleasure of existence.
